Yukon Quest seeks new Race Director

The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race is now accepting applications for the newly created position of Race Director. The Yukon Quest Race Director position replaces the former Race Manager role, and will be responsible for the overall event operations of the 1000-mile Yukon Quest, the Yukon Quest 300 and the Junior Yukon Quest sled dog races. The Race Director will play a key role in ensuring that all Yukon Quest races are coordinated and conducted in a consistent manner. The Race Director will organize, project manage and ensure quality control as well as develop, coordinate, and manage all logistics required for the successful production and completion of all Yukon Quest races and their related activities.The Race Director will be supported by and manage a Yukon Logistics Coordinator and an Alaska Logistics Coordinator to help accomplish these tasks in the Yukon and Alaska, respectively.The Race Director position will be based out of Fairbanks, Alaska and will report to Yukon Quest International, Ltd. They will have office space, support personnel and other support mechanisms provided by the Yukon Quest.The Race Director will be required to take a ‘Big Picture’ view of all Yukon Quest activities and maintain accountability and communication with both Yukon Quest offices; in Fairbanks and in Whitehorse.Required SkillsProven leadership capability and experienceProject Management and organizational skillsFinancial management skills, including knowledge of accounting and financial statementsKnowledge of sled dog sports as to trail, safety, dog care, musher needs, cold weather survival, long distance sled dog racing, and the Yukon Quest Rules as established by YQI is mandatoryPublic relations and diplomacy skillsAbility to perform multiple tasks on an ongoing basis and adapt to changing dynamicsExcellent oral and written communication skillsExperience in personnel management, including managing volunteersComputer skills to include Windows® based Office programsQualificationsValid Alaska Driver’s licenseValid passport obtained by December 1, 2007High School Diploma or equivalentCollege degree preferredMust provide own local transportationAbility to travel to Canada or any foreign countries on behalf of the organization is required, including the ability to obtain a valid passportThe 2008 Race Director contract will run from August 2007 to March 2008.
