Students Get Hands-On Look With Sled Dogs

Instead of “mush” a better term for this particular sled dog may be “munch!”There’s nothing like the real deal when it comes to hands-on learning. Especially when it’s a big, white, fluffy, 9-year-old, 70-pound sled dog named Nakita, absolutely begging for affection — and carrots — from the kids in Nancy Mertens’ second grade Lead-Deadwood Elementary classroom.Yes, Nakita, or “Nicki,” for short, is one carrot-loving canine. She’s also the inspiration for owner Denise Parker’s relatively recent dive into dog-sledding.
