Iditarod Champion Trains His Dogs In Isolation

Try training for it 33 miles north of the Arctic Circle. That’s where John Baker lives, in Kotzebue, Alaska, where February’s average high temperature is 3 degrees and daylight hours dwindle to zero in December, when he trains his dogs by headlamp.Baker, 49, lives the farthest north of all 66 competitors in this year’s 40th Iditarod, set to begin Saturday in Anchorage.
