Ellis Retires Su-Valley Championship trophy

First-day leader Egil Ellis held onto the lead Sunday to win the 10.5-miile open class at the Su Valley Championship in Montana Creek. Ellis used a 16-dog team to beat out Bill Kornmuller’s 18-dog team by 1 minute, 40 seconds after two trips around the 10.5-mile open course. After winning three consecutive titles at this race, Ellis was awarded the “perpetual” trophy to take home and add to his collection. The trophy is engraved with all the past winners of the race, and the club will order a new one for next year.Hosted by the Montana Creek Dog Mushers Association, the two days of sprint racing included heats Saturday and Sunday in four-dog, six-dog, eight-dog and open classes.Kris Rasey won the four-dog class, Jennifer Probert won the six-dog and Jennifer Sterling was first in the eight-dog race.The 35th annual race included a $10,000 purse.See www.frontiersman.com/sports for complete results from the race.
