Executive Director resigns from Quest to pursue mushing dreams

Yukon Quest Executive Director Julie Estey recently announced her resignation in order to pursue her dream of becoming a Yukon Quest musher.‘It is a bittersweet decision for me,’ explains Estey. ‘I have poured my heart into this organization and firmly believe in its mission and future. However, my two biggest personal goals are running the Yukon Quest and starting a family. I have put those on hold for the past few years to help move this race forward, but it is time for me to realize those dreams.’Estey has accepted the position of Development Director for the University of Alaska Museum of the North where she will oversee the museum’s donor relations, corporate partner and membership programs; serve as the liaison for the Museum Advisory Council; and manage the museum’s annual fundraising events.‘I am looking forward to this new opportunity,’ reports Estey. ‘I find the museum incredibly compelling and I feel fortunate to have found an organization with a commitment to support both my professional and personal goals.’The Yukon Quest will begin its search for a new Alaska Office Executive Director immediately and is committed to a smooth and flawless transition with Estey’s assistance. ‘The Yukon Quest has a lot of momentum right now,’ explains Estey. ‘One of my main priorities is to ensure that the Yukon Quest continues on its journey forward throughout this process.’ With plans in place for a mid-June start date for her new position at the museum, Estey will be pivotal in the selection of the new Alaska Office Executive Director. The timeline also ensures that she will be available to assist in a smooth transition for her successor. Yukon Quest Board President June Ryan conceded, ‘We know this will be a tough transition, but we have the right people in place to move this forward quickly. We look forward to seeing Julie on the trail for our 25th Running of the Yukon Quest in 2008.’
