Mushers Take On The Challenge

Travis Beals, 21, a life-long Seward resident, dog musher and owner of Turning Heads Kennel, along with his partner Sarah Stokey, of Cape Cod, are caring for, and training their 40 sled dogs at the Turning Heads Kennel, just off Exit Glacier/Herman Leirer Road. Beals is running the grueling 1,000-mile 2013 Iditarod Sled Dog Race in March. Beals will be a rookie and couldn’t be happier to finally entering the race, having raised and collected dogs since he was 14. Beals’ accomplishments include placing second in the 2009 Junior Iditarod. He received the humanitarian award for best dog care in the 2010 Tustumena 200, and finished third in a very competitive field for the Northern Lights 300 race.Stokey, who arrived in Seward in the summer of 2010 to work for the Seaveys’ Iditaride sled dog business also dreamed of dog mushing since she was a small girl.
