Yukon Quest Opens Art Contest For Alaska Students Along The Trail

Thirty years ago, when the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race was in its infancy, organizers turned to a vast pool of local talent for inaugural artwork and logos used in the race: schoolchildren. Its first logo, which combined the flags of Alaska and the Yukon Territory, was chosen out of more than 70 entries from schoolchildren in Alaska and the Yukon. It was designed by 13-year-old Simon Mohamad of Haines Junction, Yukon. On its 30th anniversary, the Yukon Quest is again seeking artwork from local children. It is hosting a student art contest for students who live along the race trail. It’s a way for the race to acknowledge the bond it has with the communities the dogs and mushers visit on the annual 1,000-mile trek between Fairbanks and Whitehorse, Yukon, said Marti Steury, Alaska executive director.Read more here: http://newsminer.com/view/full_story/21203783/article-Quest-makes-a-push-for-art-along-the-race-route?instance=home_features_bullets1
