Report printed in News-miner 6-13-2007.Winter may seem like a long way off, but Cantwell Classic Sled Dog Race organizers in Cantwell want to be ready when winter hits.So starting Thursday, June 14, there will be a Cantwell Classic 2008 meeting the second Thursday of every month, 7-9 p.m. at the Cantwell Community Center.Last year’s premiere race was a huge community success — won by eventual Iditarod champion Lance Mackey, by the way. It also featured an impressive roster of young mushers. The race serves as a qualifying race for both the Iditarod Sled Dog Race and the Junior Iditarod Race.Come with ideas for summer fundraising and community events. Also, mark your calendar for Aug. 4 when Cantwell will hold a Family Fun Day.“The purpose is multi-fold,” said Cynthia Brian. “Bringing the community together for everyones’ enjoyment, gathering momentum and cohesiveness in preparation for next year’s race, and fundraising for race expenses and a student scholarship.”The Cantwell Classic will be held Jan 11-13, 2,008.
