Tonight’s musher profile features Brenda Mackey, a competitor whose story is deeply rooted in one of the most well-known families in the sport of mushing.
Based in Two Rivers, Brenda operates Mackey’s Alaskan Distance Dogs, carrying forward a multi-generational legacy built on the trail. She is the daughter of four-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey, and from the very beginning, mushing was simply a part of everyday life.
Brenda began mushing when she was just three years old, getting her start in the one-dog class with a retired leader named Fritz, one of the dogs from her father’s championship team. From there, she grew up immersed in kennel life, learning not just how to run dogs, but how to live with them.
Her childhood in Interior Alaska was anything but typical. Raised largely off the grid, Brenda was homeschooled while helping with every aspect of the kennel. She worked with puppies, trained young dogs, and assisted in preparing teams for long-distance racing. That hands-on experience gave her a deep understanding of what it takes to build and maintain a competitive distance program.
As she gained experience, Brenda transitioned from helping behind the scenes to taking on more responsibility on the runners. She began training yearling teams and eventually earned the opportunity to run her own race teams. Over time, she stepped into her role not just as a musher, but also as a kennel operator responsible for carrying on a respected name in the sport.
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has always been a constant in Brenda’s life. It is more than a race for her. It represents years of preparation, family tradition, and the long cycle of developing dogs from young prospects into experienced leaders. That long view, watching dogs grow, trusting seasoned leaders, and building teams over time, is at the core of how she approaches mushing today.
Outside of the kennel, Brenda enjoys reading, traveling, photography, hiking, and music. Those interests reflect the same appreciation for place and experience that defines her life on the trail.
For Brenda Mackey, mushing is not just about competition. It is about continuing a legacy, honoring the work that came before her, and guiding the next generation of dogs, and mushers, down the trail.
