Who is Iditarod Expedition Class Musher Kjell Inge Røkke?

Kjell Inge Røkke joins the Iditarod this year as part of the race’s Expedition Class, bringing with him a lifelong connection to the ocean, exploration, and the outdoors. Born in Norway, Røkke has long maintained ties to Alaska and the United States. His professional journey began in 1982 when he purchased his first fishing vessel in the U.S., launching a career that would grow into the development of one of the world’s leading global fisheries companies and a wide range of investments across Norway and North America.

Since 1996, Røkke has served as the principal owner and chairman of Aker ASA, a publicly listed industrial investment company and one of Norway’s largest private employers. Through Aker and its affiliated companies, he has played a major role in building knowledge-based industries with global reach, particularly in energy, marine technology, and advanced engineering. Alongside his business work, Røkke has also become known for his philanthropic efforts. As a signatory of The Giving Pledge, he has committed to dedicating the majority of his wealth to charitable causes.

One of his most ambitious projects is REV Ocean, a state-of-the-art research vessel designed to advance ocean science and support international collaboration on marine sustainability. The ship brings together scientists, researchers, and innovators from around the world to better understand and protect the planet’s oceans. That commitment to exploration and stewardship of the natural world closely reflects the spirit of the Iditarod and the historic trail that mushers travel across Alaska.

Røkke was introduced to sled dog racing by accomplished mushers Thomas Wærner and Joar Leifseth Ulsom, from whom he learned the fundamentals of working with dogs and traveling by team across winter terrain. Under their mentorship, he developed a deep respect for the dogs, the traditions of mushing, and the skills required to travel safely through northern wilderness.

This year, Røkke will travel the Iditarod Trail as part of the Expedition Class, accompanied by 2020 Iditarod Champion Thomas Wærner. A father of four, he brings a lifetime of leadership, curiosity, and global perspective to the experience as he joins the long line of travelers who have followed this historic trail across Alaska.
