Writer, Samatha Watson, KYUK, published an article, Subsistence-style dog mushing is fading. How Alaska’s salmon crisis is changing the sport. It describes it as A Changing Trail. The tradition of dog mushing has changed a lot throughout its rich history in Alaska. While some changes come from development in the sport, others have been forced by a changing climate. KYUK takes a look at how warming conditions have impacted the genetics, nutrition, and race day competition of sled dogs.

The article discusses the decline of subsistence-style dog mushing in Alaska due to a salmon crisis influenced by climate change. Kriya Dunlap, an associate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, reflects on her father’s experiences with dog sled racing and how traditional diets, primarily consisting of salmon and moose, contributed to the dogs’ health.

As salmon populations dwindle, mushers are forced to rely on expensive kibble, leading to a reduction in the number of dogs they can keep. This shift has resulted in smaller dog teams returning to traditional practices but highlights the larger impact of climate change on both wildlife and human livelihoods in Alaska. Dunlap’s research indicates that the decline in salmon availability affects the nutritional health of both dogs and humans who traditionally share similar diets. The article also notes that climate change is causing disruptions in on-snow dog sled racing, further threatening this cultural activity.
