The trail to Nome officially began on Saturday as 22 mushers submitted their entries for the 2027 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race during the annual Musher Sign-Up Picnic at Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla.
While Opening Day represents only the first chapter in building next year’s field, the list already includes an impressive blend of proven contenders, experienced veterans, and ambitious rookies. With 251 days remaining until the ceremonial start in Anchorage, excitement is already beginning to build across Alaska’s mushing community.
A Competitive Field Takes Shape
The early roster includes several of the top finishers from the 2026 Iditarod, signaling that many of last season’s strongest teams are already preparing for another run to Nome.
Among those returning are 2026 runner-up Travis Beals, third-place finisher Jeff Deeter, sixth-place finisher Matt Hall, and seventh-place finisher Riley Dyche. All four have established themselves as consistent contenders capable of racing near the front of the pack and will undoubtedly be among the teams to watch throughout the season.
Joining them are veteran competitors Jessie Royer, Bailey Vitello, Mille Porsild, Sydney Bahl, Matthew Failor, Chad Stoddard, Hunter Keefe, Ebbe Pedersen, Amanda Otto, and Joseph Sabin, giving the race an experienced core even this early in the registration period.

A New Generation of Rookies
One of the highlights of this year’s sign-up event was the enthusiasm surrounding the rookie class.
Every rookie reaching Opening Day has already invested years qualifying through sanctioned distance races while building the experience required to safely race across Alaska. For many fans, following the rookie race within the race often becomes one of the most compelling storylines each March.
Several of today’s newcomers represent the future of long-distance mushing and will be looking to make an immediate impact when the race gets underway next spring.
More Than Registration
The annual Musher Sign-Up Picnic has become one of the most anticipated events of the offseason.
It brings together mushers, race officials, volunteers, sponsors, families, and supporters in an atmosphere that feels more like a reunion than a registration day. It’s an opportunity for old friends to reconnect, for rookies to officially join the Iditarod family, and for fans to celebrate another season of sled dog racing before training ramps up throughout the summer and fall.
Of course, the real stars of the day are the sled dogs themselves. While cameras naturally focus on the mushers signing paperwork, every entry represents months of careful planning, breeding, conditioning, and teamwork by canine athletes preparing for one of the world’s greatest endurance races.
Plenty of Big Names Still to Come
Historically, many of the sport’s biggest names wait until later in the summer or fall to submit their entries, meaning the current field is almost certain to grow significantly before the December registration deadline.
As more teams commit to the race, storylines will continue to develop, rivalries will emerge, and fans will begin making their early predictions for who could challenge for the coveted Burled Arch in Nome.
For now, however, the 2027 Iditarod season is officially underway.
